Upgradation of Medical Colleges



The Government has approved upgradation of 39 existing Government Medical Colleges (including Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli) in the third phase of PMSSY, at an approved cost of Rs.150 Crore (Central contribution-Rs.120 Crore and State share- Rs.30 Crore) per Institute. 


State-wise medical colleges/institutions identified for upgradation in the third phase is given below:

Depending upon individual institution’s requirement and gap analysis, the up gradation may cover construction of Trauma Centre and/or Super Speciality Block as Centre of Excellence on areas like Oncology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Cardiology, CTVS, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics and Burns & Plastics etc. and procurement and installation of medical equipments for existing as well as new facilities.

The maintenance and medical personnel are to be provided by the States/Institutions concerned.

The third phase of PMSSY was approved by Central Government in November, 2013 when all requests of States/UTs had been taken into account.

The Central Government has provided financial assistance to 72 State Government Medical Colleges across 20 States under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for strengthening and upgradation of State Government medical colleges for starting new Post Graduate courses/creating Post Graduate seats.  The Government has also approved new Centrally Sponsored Scheme for increase in intake capacity of MBBS seats intended to add about 10,000 MBBS seats in existing State Government/Central Government medical colleges through upgradation under the scheme.

The respective State Governments/Institutions are to ensure availability of adequate manpower including qualified and experienced medical faculty for smooth functioning of the medical colleges run and managed by them.
The Health Minister was replying to a question in the Lok Sabha here today.
