Ludhiana, April 6: Union Information &
Broadcasting Minister Sh. Manish Tewari has underlined the need for
change of mindset and perception amongst students towards agriculture,
which is the backbone of country’s economy. Delivering the convocation
address in Govind National College, Narangwal in District Ludhiana
today, Sh. Tewari said the rural colleges should introduce such
inspirational courses aimed at encouraging youths towards agriculture,
which would help diversification in the sector. He said private
educational institutions working in the rural making are making a
handsome contribution in the field of higher education. He said that a
majority of the students can ill afford hefty fees for pursuing
professional courses and private institutions working on non-commercial
basis have a greater responsibility on this count.
Sh. Tewari awarded degrees to 260 students and also awarded scholarships
and stipends to brilliant and needy students. Such stipends had been
sponsored by various donors including NRIs of the area. The Minister
also announced a grant of Rs.5 lakh for the development of the college.
The I&B Minister also promised Central help for setting up a Media
Education Centre in the college. He asked the management to send the
proposal and promised its early clearance. Sh. Tewari had earlier
granted Rs. 5 lakh to this college from his discretionary quota.
Earlier, Sh. Tewari inaugurated an Indoor Shooting Range in the college
which has been built with a grant of Rs. 50 lakh from the University
Grants Commission. The college Principal Dr. Hardiljit Singh Gosal and
the Chairman of the College Management Committee Sh. Pritpal Singh
Grewal presented an award of honour to Sh. Tewari.
On this occasion, senior leaders Sh. Malkit Singh Dakha, Sh. Pawan
Dewan, Sh. Jasbir Singh Jassi Khangura, Sh. Jagpal Singh Khangura etc
were also present.
